The Cultural Heritage Cloud, also known as the European Collaborative Cloud for Cultural Heritage (ECCCH), is a flagship initiative of the European Union designed to create a shared digital infrastructure connecting cultural heritage institutions and professionals across Europe. Its goal is to offer a suite of collaborative digital tools tailored to the cultural heritage sector, lowering the barriers for smaller and geographically remote institutions to benefit from advanced digital technologies.

The Cloud introduces a digital dimension to the preservation, conservation, restoration, and enhancement of Europe’s cultural heritage. By providing state-of-the-art tools for digitisation, research, and data management, it empowers institutions, researchers, and practitioners — both professional and non-professional — to manage and share digital objects more efficiently and sustainably.

Within this context, KINETIKA contributes to the vision of the Cultural Heritage Cloud by advancing collaborative, technology-driven approaches to understanding and engaging with heritage. Through its work, KINETIKA supports the creation of interoperable digital resources, innovative research workflows, and participatory models that enhance accessibility and interaction within the cultural heritage domain.

The Cloud is being developed by ECHOES (European Cloud for Heritage OpEn Science), a project funded by the European Commission and UK Research and Innovation (UKRI). ECHOES brings together diverse cultural heritage communities across Europe to form a unified digital ecosystem that integrates the outcomes of all projects supported under ECCCH-related calls, including KINETIKA. By adopting a holistic, open-science approach, ECHOES promotes collaborative knowledge creation and strengthens the connection between tangible and intangible heritage assets.

The digital environment shaped by ECHOES and its projects enables both humans and Artificial Intelligence agents to digitise, analyse, and reinterpret cultural heritage data. This process leads to richer insights and new forms of understanding about cultural phenomena and historical contexts. Among the Cloud’s core objectives is the development of Digital Twins-dynamic digital representations of heritage objects that integrate multidisciplinary information and allow users to explore and interact with them in innovative ways.

By 2028, ECHOES will deliver a unified digital platform consolidating the contributions of EU and national initiatives. To ensure its long-term sustainability, the project will establish a dedicated legal entity to oversee the Cloud’s continued growth and to support the evolving digital needs of the European cultural heritage community.
